Pau,
gateway to the Pyrenées

Pau is a charming destination located just 100 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 50 km from Spain, offering stunning views of the Pyrenees and nestled along the Gave de Pau River. Its medieval streets, picturesque parks, and vibrant cafés and restaurants make it perfect for a stroll. Rich in history, Pau has long been associated with French kings and aristocratic elegance, adding to its unique charm.
Pau is the birth place of Henri IV (1553), king of France and Navarra. A giant tortoise shell used as his cradle can be seen in Château de Pau. Henry IV remains in history as one of the most liked kings of France. In addition, the current Swedish royal family has it's roots in Pau; king Charles XIV Jean (Bernadotte) was born in Pau (1763) and his birth house is a museum.
Béarn has a laid-back charm with a deep history that you can feel as you wander through its towns and villages. Since the 19th century, visitors have been drawn here for the mild climate and natural hot springs. One of the most famous spa towns, Salies-de-Béarn, is known for its mineral-rich waters, once used in the Bronze Age to preserve food! Over time, people realized that bathing in these waters made them healthier and more resilient—and the rest is history.
